Studio
Five was founded in 1982 by Bob and Sylvia Yike. Drawing
on their previous experience they started a statuary reproduction
and specialty paint finishing studio. In 1983 they met
Kay Glenn master carver at an art show. Kay was carving
in a very formal style of Japanese relief sculpture using
"Kibori No To" carving knives. After talking
with the Yikes she started carving New Orleans scene for
Studio Five. Excited about their new subject matter for
their reproduction expertise, Bob and Sylvia asked their
son John to join them in launching their new venture.
Studio Five first prints were offered at New Orleans'
1984 World's Fair. While the fair was a local success
it never attracted the large crowds needed to make it
a financial success. When the world fair closed Sylvia
and Kay opened their first retail venture "Sculptured
Prints" at the new remolded Jax Brewery. We were
approached about opening a store at Riverwalk set to open
on the old worlds fair site in 1986. We move the Jax store
there and opened as Street Scene Gallery for the grand
opening in August 1986.
